Red Bull Empowers Durban Talents

In 2019, a group of artists came together in the KZN Music House during the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy to record, collaborate and celebrate some of the freshest music coming out of Durban. Dubane Connect is the result of those sessions: a multi-genre EP featuring a host of artists that are forging the young sound of eThekwini.

The 5-Track music project features 12 different musicians from different backgrounds and music genres who all have one thing in common – they were born and bred in the coastal city of Durban. Some of the featured musicians include Mnqobi Yazo, DJ LeSoul, Campmasters, Robin ThirdFloor, Nipho Hurd, Garde, Nobuhle Khuzwayo and producers Emex, King Bruce, MusiColours and uBeyond.

These musicians got together last year at the Red Bull Amaphiko Academy, as part of the festival’s program, where they attended a Songwriters Camp. At the camp, the local musicians had the opportunity to use the KZN Music House state-of-the-art recording studios and received mentorship from the legendary Madala Kunene. The Red Bull Dubane Connect EP is the product that was produced during the 3-day studio sessions.

The project has been titled Dubane Connect; the word Dubane is the slang name for Durban and the word Connect represents the collaborative spirit in which the project was created and the commitment by Red Bull to connect Durban music and musicians to its global audience. Each of the 5-songs is of a different music genre and represents a piece of the Durban music scene. Dubane Connect is really what it would sound like walking on the streets of Durban.
